I see it time and time again in fad diets where they make you practice restriction with certain foods, you have to buy their products, work with their coaches who hardly know anything about nutrition, and after you lose the weight you’re left lost and confused as to how to keep it off while transitioning back to your normal life. I knew I wanted this program to be different. When I had my own weight loss journey and lost 20 pounds on a fad diet as a teenager it made me dread being healthy. All I could think about was the next time I could have pizza without having to spend 30 minutes running to make up for it.

NUTRITION GUIDANCE

We focus on what eating balanced looks like for a healthy weight. The first step to building a solid foundation for weight loss is to build the framework for a healthy plate with protein, fat, and carbohydrates. The carbohydrate module will teach you what carbs you can fill up on that won’t put on unwanted pounds. The protein module will teach you how to calculate how much protein you need daily and includes plant and animal sources. The rest of the modules go into depth on portion sizes, the most important parts of the nutrition facts label for weight loss, meal planning, fueling hikes, and various trackers to use! Once going through the modules you will be able to start building your shopping list!

STEP CLUB CHALLENGE + COMMUNITY

In the step club you, “choose your own adventure” by setting your own daily step goal. It’s recommended to do 10,000 steps per day, this adds up to about five miles which is about 30 min of daily exercise. The CDC’s recommendation is 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. You go at your own pace to complete the challenge. You will submit your steps with photo proof to earn states throughout the challenge. The interactive community is a place where you can share photos of your hikes, meet awesome friends, and find inspiration to complete your steps daily. There will be a place where you can send Emily a direct message for additional support.

Having been a yo-yo dieter for years before losing 20 pounds and finally keeping it off, I’ve been through my fair share of ups and downs when it comes to losing weight.  What I learned about eating a balanced plate when I became a Registered Dietitian totally transformed my mindset around food!  I was amazed at how it decreased my cravings, kept me full and satisfied, and I felt more in control of what food I was eating instead of the food controlling me! 

 

As I continued my health journey I started to fall in love with hiking, not only were there beautiful views, but it reduced my stress and anxiety!  I started to take interest in how more movement and time spent outside can have a huge impact on food decisions.  I knew I wanted to spend my life teaching others how they can improve their weight by eating balanced meals and spending more time walking outside.

What is hiking?


Hiking is the activity of going on long walks, specifically in the woods or country. Hiking can simply be a long walk in the woods and doesn’t have to involve overnight backpacking. During the HYWH step challenge all movement counts toward your daily step goal so you don’t have to hike in the woods in order to get steps in.




I’ve never hiked before, how do I get started?


Inside the portal there is a “New to Hiking” downloadable training guide that will help you to get started on your hiking journey! There are also informational modules on hiking that include what to wear, best shoes, snack ideas, how to find trails, hydration, and more! The guides and modules will help you to feel confident when trying your first hike!




Do I have to hike in order to participate in the challenge?


You do not have to hike in order to complete the challenge! All steps count toward your weekly step count and can simply be completed by walking anywhere.




Do I have to physically be in the state in order to get to complete the steps?


This is a virtual challenge so you do not have to be physically in a state in order to complete the steps! Once you commit to a state, steps can be done anywhere and can count toward the specific state you are working on.




What are the prizes?


You will earn prizes throughout the challenge at mile markers 1 million, 2 million, and 3 million steps! Once you reach the 1 million step club you will receive a HYWH custom athletic t-shirt, 2 million club you will earn a custom HYWH backpack, and 3 million a National Park Annual Pass.




What type of hiker is this community for?


Everyone goes at their own pace and completes the challenge separately so the challenge is for new hikers, experienced hikers, and advanced hikers! How quickly you complete the challenge will be based on your hiking level. Inside the portal there are downloadable training guides for new hikers, experienced hikers, and advanced hikers that will help you to determine how many steps you’d like to complete per day.
